GRAPES: 86% MUSKAT OTTONEL, 14% WEIßBURGUNDER
SKIN CONTACT: 15 DAYS
REGION: BURGENLAND, AUSTRIA
Producer information: One of the more acclaimed wineries in the Austrian natural wine world, the couple of Gernot and Heike Heinrich founded Weingut Heinrich in 1990 with only one hectacre in the town of Gols. They’ve grown that to around 100 hectares in Burgenland (85 owned, and 25 farmed) since then, producing consistently delicious bottles.
Vinification method: "Muskat Freyheit" comes from a blend of Muskat Ottonel and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). The grapes are handpicked mid-September, fermented spontaneously and left on the skins for 15 days in amphoras. They're then gently basket pressed, undergo malolactic fermentation, and age for 9 months in amphoras on the lees. Bottled unfiltered without added sulphur in a clay flagon according to biodynamic principles and the eternal cycle of nature.
Tasting notes: medium-bodied, juicy kumquat, grapefruit, elderflower, fennel
Pairings: shrimp al ajillo
