GRAPES: GEWÜRZTRAMINER, VIOGNIER, CHARDONNAY
SKIN CONTACT: 30 DAYS
REGION: WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OREGON
Vinification method: A native of Oregon, winemaker Joseph Swick returned to his home state in 2013 after a decade of working harvests in areas as diverse as Piedmont, Portugal, and Tasmania. Joe’s ethos is rooted in showcasing the unique cold climate terroirs of the PNW using a hands-off approach and experimenting with unconventional grapes for the area. Swick partners exclusively with organic and biodynamic growers to develop wines that he himself would like to drink - fresh, lively, with no conventional additives, only adding modest amounts of SO2 on select wines when absolutely necessary.
"The Flood" aims to capture the big picture of winemaking in the Pacific Northwest, utilizing grapes from both Oregon and Washington vineyards. The flood in question is the Missoula Flood, which shaped the Willamette Valley and Columbia Gorge some 10 million years ago. The grapes are vinified separately, with all undergoing 30 days of skin contact. The wines are then aged 6 months in neutral French oak barrels before being blended. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, with a small dose of S02.
